Classes

1) Scottish Dance
Looking for some culture? Fun? Exercise? Great people to hang out with? Whether you're Scottish or wish you were, join us for a GREAT dance class designed for homeschooling families! Did I mention our EXCELLENT, FAMOUS, TALENTED, KIDS-LOVE-HIM instructor, Mr. Ron Wallace?

You won't see or hear any bagpipes here, but rather:

Scottish Country Dancing is the traditional ballroom dancing of Scotland. The Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS), based in Edinburgh, was founded in 1923 to preserve this joyful social dance tradition. Since then Scottish Country Dancing has spread all over the world.

Unlike Highland dances, which are usually solo performances accompanied by bagpipes, Country dances are danced with partners in sets of two or more couples doing an exciting variety of formations. The music, performed live at parties and some classes, is provided by a fiddle and piano, or by a whole band. Dance tempos vary from lively jigs, hornpipes and reels, to the elegant, slower strathspeys.

STARTING WED. SEPT. 8
WEDNESDAYS: 11:00 am
MONDAYS: 4:00 pm (YOUTH/Homeschooler beginners)

Monroe Hall, 1400 West College Ave., Santa Rosa (just West of G & G Market)
Pay each class session Make checks payable to: RSCDS – SF – Santa Rosa
(Royal Scottish Country Dance Society San Francisco Branch – Santa Rosa Class)

1 person: $7/class
2 people: $10/class
3 or more people: $15/class (that means the 4th or more people dance free!)

No need to sign up or commit to every week, but it helps to come regularly in order to learn the dances!! AND, it's addicting! We've made it part of our family culture! You'll be dancing in your kitchen and practicing with your kids!!

Any questions, call or e-mail Jane Bailey at 793 7931 or baileyclan@earthlink.net

Clothing: Many girls wear skirts, but I wear modest pants (capris okay). Shorts for boys okay, but no sweats, and we like to avoid a "raggy" appearance. You'll get hot and sweaty, so dress (modestly) for that! Tennis shoes are fine or any comfortable non-marking sole. I dance in my Keens. Jazz or ballet shoes fine if your feet can handle it! Two of my boys bought used ghillies from Mr. Wallace's "used shoe" bag, so that's an option too. My other son wears tennis shoes.

MOMS: WE WANT YOU TOO! Dads too! (Yes, Bill dances when he can come!)

See you on the floor!! Spread the word!

2) Cello

Session is from Sept - May.

All equipment necessary is included. More details on what to wear etc. when you sign up!

Cost: $7/child per class

Payments are made monthly IN ADVANCE (on the last class of each month in advance for the following month).

Jim will determine how many classes will be held for each particular month (scheduling around holidays or adding a 5th class for the longer months) and let us know how much we owe for the next month.

If you miss a class, it can be made up at any of his other class offerings (age appropriate) during the week at his studio or other locations TBA.

SPECIAL NOTE: In return for Jim's low cost for the classes, he has asked for assistance at the club i.e. cleaning, polishing etc. I have GUARANTEED him that he would have lots of help! I don't know if that will be just during classtime, or if additional time will be needed.

Please reply to Jane Bailey (baileyclan@earthlink.net) regarding your interest and any questions you may have.

SIGN-UPS: Here's how to sign up:
Please give me the NAME and AGE of the children you are signing up, as well as your FULL NAME, ADDRESS, PHONE and E-MAIL ADDRESS so I can give Jim the info and we can finalize the sign-up procedures!!

Mom Looking for Recommendations
My two sons are interested in martial arts classes as well as soccer. We are completely unfamiliar with classes offered, hopefully, to homeschoolers in our general area of Southwest Santa Rosa. If you have worked with instructors that offer daytime classes for martial arts or who you think might be interested in offering a class or just any recommendations at all, we would sure appreciate it!! 528-1124 or baileya2@sbcglobal.net. Thank you, thank you, thank you :-)

Free Matinees at Cinnabar Theatre!
These matinees are filling up fast! Sign up soon.

We are kicking off next seasons FREE MATINEE program with Ella; The American Dream. A show written and performed by the amazing San Francisco Jazz singer Kim Nalley. This show is about the early years of one of our great American Jazz Singer's Ella Fitzgerald. This will appeal to 3rd grade through High School and we anticipate the matinee to be full. Please call today to reserve space for your class (707) 763-8920, ask for Kate or Juliet.

TheaterAlive! Matinee Program 2010/11

WHAT IS TheaterAlive!?

It’s Cinnabar Theater’s School Matinee Program that offers students a place to “experience art.” Our Petaluma schools have repeatedly expressed a keen interest in attending a matinee at Cinnabar if it were scheduled during school hours. Cinnabar wants to make these matinees accessible to school groups to experience both theater and opera.

Many young people have a proclivity to perform that is not adequately supported in the public schools. Although we do offer extensive after-school training, attending a performance exposes them to the magic and power of live theater. Cinnabar is excited to be offering one special matinee per production for school field trips, totaling 6 performances. Plays are accessible in Cinnabar’s intimate 99-seat theater and we believe that being away from the schools helps them focus on the story and the performance.

2010/11 MATINEE DATES AVAILABLE:

Ella: The American Dream September 8, 2010, Performance: 12pm - suitable for ages 3rd grade and up

American Idol has nothing on Ella Fitzgerald’s rags to riches story: the Apollo audiences were worse than a thousand Simon Cowells and Ella was homeless, a bedraggled vagrant who danced in the streets for meager handouts. How did a homeless New York street dancer become America’s First Lady of Song? Set in 1930’s Harlem, Ella: the American Dream features the swinging music of Ella Fitzgerald, finger popping dance reminiscent of the Cotton Club and cameos by Duke, Billie, Frankie Manning and more.

Woody Guthrie's: American Song January 13, 2011, Performance: 11:30a - suitable for ages 3rd grade and up

Legendary folk singer Woody Guthrie wrote songs about hard times - the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl, high unemployment, and war. But he also sang about the joy of being alive and being an American. This stirring musical follows Guthrie as he rambles coast to coast from California to the New York Islands, and features over two dozen of his most famous songs, including "Bound for Glory" and "This Land Is Your Land."

Travels With My Aunt October 7, 2010, Performance: 11:30a - suitable for Jr High and up

"Travels With My Aunt" is the theatrical distillation of a 1969 novel by Graham Greene about a retired bank manager named Henry Pulling, "a rather static character," as he says of himself, so bound to habit that the death and funeral of his mother offer a break in routine that he finds himself "agreeably excited" by.

Dracula/The Medium November 11, 2010, Performance: 11:30a - suitable for Jr High and up

Come join Cinnabar as we explore our scarier side. Set around Halloween, we will offer a one-act about Dracula and a "one-act" Opera. The Medium is this spooky opera written by Gian Carlo Menotti. He was inspired to write and compose The Medium after attending a séance in the small town in Austria. It's a blend of murder and the supernatural. The Medium premiered in New York in 1946.

Ernest in Love April 7, 2011, Performance: 11:30a - suitable for ages 3rd grade and up

Based on the "comedy of manners" play by Oscar Wilde, The Importance of Being Ernest this is the musical adaptation. In 2010, an Off Broadway revival of Earnest in Love was presented by the Irish Repertory Theatre.

Enchanted April June 9, 2011, Performance: 11:30a - suitable for Jr High and up

Four Englishwomen break free of their rain-drenched sorrows and oppression to delight in a month at a rented Italian castle, seeking the promise of better times and sunnier outlooks. Barber casts a warm, relaxed spell, guaranteed to bolster even the most sagging spirits. His superior character insight, poignancy and high comedy will keep audiences in thrall to the last moment! This is a superior “feel good” play that doesn’t manipulate or underestimate its audience. Those looking for surprises, redemption and, yes, “enchantment” couldn’t ask for better.

OUR GOAL

We want to expose over 700 children this season, many of whom may not be exposed to opera or theater without this opportunity to “experience art” not just talk about it, but to be where the magic happens. Studies have shown, children exposed to the arts are better students and become art lovers as adults.

STUDY GUIDES AVAILABLE:

Along with the performance, Cinnabar will provide study guides and offer a post performance discussion with the students, offering the children the opportunity to meet and talk to the performers and discuss what they’ve seen in a meaningful manner.

WE STILL NEED FUNDING:

To make this program happen we need Corporate and Foundation Funding. Please call (707) 763-8920 and speak with Juliet Pokorny the Development Director
